Marriage Monday: Become God’s Masterpiece

Heaven’s dream for us is to become God’s Masterpiece, no matter what our struggles are, what occurs in our lives, and where we find ourselves. When we tie the knot we imagine happily ever after. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way we expected. How can we turn this around to become God’s Masterpiece?

Why am I HERE?

When things don’t turn out the way we expected we start asking questions. We wonder how we got in this place.

We’re tempted to ask God “Why did this happen? Why am I HERE?”  We prayerfully ask what we did to deserve this. We pray for deliverance, we fret over the situation. And we don’t often hear an answer to these prayers. We feel stuck. Our love can grow cold.

Why am I here?

God dreams for us to be transformed in the difficult times rather than run from them. He uses poetic words to describe this life. In James 1:22  the original word is “poietes,” meaning poet, conductor, author, or performer.

As God’s poet, I can look at the hard times in my marriage as opportunities to create something beautiful. I can start by asking the same question with a different emphasis. Instead of asking Him “Why am I HERE,” I can ask Him “Why am I here?”

It’s a subtle change. Do I focus on the hard thing or on my role in it? Keeping my eyes on my role, my purpose and my perseverance changes everything. My attitude flips  from “How can I get out of this situation?” to “What can I do in this situation to create beauty and transformation?

Become God’s Masterpiece

As an artist in God’s plan, I employ tools. My artistic tools are not brushes, paint, and canvas. Instead I employ God’s Word, the challenge and my own humble, teachable heart.

God is the most creative artist ever and it’s no surprise that He designed us to artistically use the challenges in our world to create beauty through a transformed life. He also knows the secret to influencing our spouses is in revealing ourselves as God’s masterpiece.

Don’t just listen to the Word of Truth and not respond to it, for that is the essence of self-deception. So always let his Word become like poetry written and fulfilled by your life!
