Marriage Monday: Be On Mission

Let’s face it, life can be hard, stuff happens when you least expect it. We can get stuck when we can’t see the forest for the trees (did you notice how I tied that into the photo above?).

We can’t always be prepared for what’s around the next corner, but when we have intentionally chosen to be on mission together, navigating the bumps and potholes becomes manageable because our perspective isn’t totally on the problems. We can take our eyes off that pesky tree and see the whole wonderful forest.

What Does it Mean to Be On Mission?

Being “on mission” means “having an important goal or purpose that is accompanied by strong conviction, as in a calling or vocation” according to dictionary.com.

When we’re on mission, problems still occur, struggles still get us down, life doesn’t become perfect. What changes is our perspective – we see the problems as an opportunity to advance the mission.

Years ago we chose the Bible verse below as our mission. At that time we had two children-Jason and Robin.

It is the greatest joy of my life to hear that my children are consistently living their lives in the ways of truth!

3 John 4 TPT

The mission guided us well, but our ‘children’ have expanded since choosing it. Now we also have our daughter in law Heather, son in law CJ, and our two grandsons, Kaleb and Sam. In addition, we consider the couples we mentor and the mentor couples we lead to be ‘children’ as well.

It’s Time to Rewrite our Mission Statement

My husband Bruce retired about a month ago, and lots of changes are happening! We decided not to call it retirement, for instance. Retire means to go to bed, and we are not going to recline & decline! Instead, we are calling it Act II.

I will blog more about this later, but instead of just launching into Act II without a plan, we are taking some time to transition, calling it Intermission.

During Intermission, we are busy behind the scenes moving the sets, placing the props, changing costumes. One of the things we will do is rewrite our Mission Statement.

This mission will guide us in the challenging years ahead of us. It will be a guide for us when we’re not sure which way to go, showing us how to live so that our lives can be a legacy to those following us.

We don’t expect to do life perfectly, but when we lose our way it will help us get back on track.

What’s Your Marriage Mission?

Have you ever considered writing a marriage mission statement? As we get ready to update ours, I did some research. Turns out this is a thing! See the list below for starters.

When we have finished our new mission statement, I will be sharing it on my blog. I’d love to read yours. Do you have one already? Or are you going to be writing one? Please share it here so we can all be inspired.
