Sometimes marriage can be stormy, sometimes marriage can be peaceful and calm. No matter what, for a successful marriage, you have to just keep moving.
Water Never Stops Moving
This summer we visited the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and stayed in a house right on Lake Superior. We woke up one morning with the pinks and oranges of a beautiful Lake Superior sunrise casting a glow over us.
We started the first day of vacay like we do every morning, coffee in hand, Bibles open; but that scene outside kept stealing our attention. Water is mesmerizing, isn’t it?
I asked Bruce, my husband of 42 years (how is that possible?), what he would want to share on Marriage Monday. This is what he said.
The water outside never stops moving, day after day, season after season. Sometimes it’s stormy, sometimes it’s calm. But it just keeps on moving.
Peaceful, serene scenes make us want to hold still and just be. I love to sit and stare, I’ve actually honed that ability into a skill.
But Bruce is right, even in a scene like this, there is movement. The water in a big lake never stops moving, day after day, season after season. It just keeps on moving.
That’s just like marriage. Sometimes it’s stormy, sometimes it’s calm. But you have to keep on moving.
Healthy Marriages Never Stop Moving
Our mission is to keep moving in our marriage toward the goal of knowing Jesus. We know the future will have some difficulties, some storms, but also some beautiful sunrises and calm waters.
We know sometimes it will feel like we’re at a standstill and any movement is imperceptible. We also know sometimes the storms will be so rough that we’ll be hanging on for dear life. In either of these cases, we will probably want to stop, sit still, and just be. We may be tempted in the future to think we are done moving. Done growing, just done.
But that’s not the way we roll. Through it all, we will keep moving toward Him. Because that is the way we roll.
I don’t depend on my own strength to accomplish this; however I do have one compelling focus: I forget all of the past as I fasten my heart to the future instead. I run straight for the divine invitation of reaching the heavenly goal and gaining the victory-prize through the anointing of Jesus.
