“The most important [commandment],” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

God uses the metaphor of marriage to describe the close, devoted relationship He wants with us. With that ‘marriage’ as a model, we can learn to be the best spouse to the one we marry on earth.
“Israel, I will make you my wife; I will be true and faithful; I will show you constant love and mercy and make you mine for ever. I will keep my promise and make you mine, and you will acknowledge me as Lord.”
Hosea 2:19-20 GNB

Marriage is like a dance. He takes a step back and I step forward. I take a step back and he steps forward.
In sickness…in health.
For better…for worse.
In bad times…in good times.
“The next time your partner is ill, remember that it is an opportunity to put hands and feet to your marriage vows—in sickness and in health.” Dr. Les Parrott
“I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Matthew 25:36 NIV

Just as a 3 legged stool is sturdy and a cord of 3 stands is strong, so our marriage of 3 cannot be quickly broken. God + husband + wife = 1 incredible power.
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12 NIV

The first thing Jesus asks us to do after He unselfishly and liberally fills us with joy and delight…is to unselfishly and liberally give it away. Start with the person you wake up with every morning.
“I have loved you, [just] as the Father has loved Me; abide in My love [continue in His love with Me]. If you keep My commandments [if you continue to obey My instructions], you will abide in My love and live on in it, just as I have obeyed My Father’s commandments and live on in His love. I have told you these things, that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy and gladness may be of full measure and complete and overflowing. This is My commandment: that you love one another [just] as I have loved you.”

When we desire each other, God asks us to do marriage-for-keeps just like when we desire God, He gives us love-for-keeps.
God uses our earthly faithfulness to illustrate His heavenly faithfulness.
“I will make you my wife forever, showing you righteousness and justice, unfailing love and compassion. I will be faithful to you and make you mine, and you will finally know me as the Lord.”
Hosea 2:19-20 NLT
