what is true love?

2014-5-7 photoMany people wonder how to find true love.  There are all sorts of websites ready to assist you in this seemingly monumental task. Let’s start with defining terms; what is true love?

I found a crazy website called the Love Calculator. It evaluates your first names and makes a prediction on the chance of your relationship working out. Seriously! You just type in your first name and the other person’s first name, and it will predict how successful your relationship will be.

I tried this with my name and Bruce, my husband for 37 years. We got a whopping 26% success rate!  LOL. I think they need to go back to the drawing board!

What is true love?

If we look at the great love chapter in the bible, 1 Corinthians 13, we find a definition of love. The Greek word used for love in this chapter is agapé.  Agapé love is the love God has for us. It’s perfect love. It’s true love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7, 13 lists the characteristics of love:

  • Love is patient
  • Love is kind
  • Love does not envy
  • Love does not boast
  • Love is not proud
  • Love does not dishonor others
  • Love is not self-seeking
  • Love is not easily angered
  • Love keeps no record of wrongs
  • Love does not delight in evil
  • Love delights in truth
  • Love always protects
  • Love always trusts
  • Love always hopes
  • Love always perseveres
  • Love is greater than faith and hope

Do you have true love?

Most of us would be tempted to read that list and evaluate our spouse or significant other based on the list. How did they do? Not so good, right?

This is a daunting list, to be sure. But the proper perspective is not to judge someone else by this list, but to ask yourself, how am I doing?

But wait a minute! You might be tempted to argue that if your spouse doesn’t show you this kind of love, how can you be expected to reciprocate? Valid question. We all have needs, right? Don’t we all want to be treated as wonderfully as this list indicates? Wouldn’t it be easier to show this kind of love if we first received it?

Have you received true love?

Actually, there is Someone who is standing by ready to love you exactly like this, every day of your life. You don’t have to go first, He’s ok with being the first one. As a recipient of this kind of love, you are bound to start loving back.

I’ve been loved like this since 1995. The One who loves me is Jesus Christ. He is able and willing to meet my needs every day of my life, showering me with this kind of love. That love has changed me.

  • I no longer feel as needy for love, my needs are met by Jesus
  • I have gained confidence and peace as the grateful recipient of this love
  • I am now equipped to show this type of love to others, especially Bruce, the love of my life

The bible tells us “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
